Dōjigiri

Dōjigiri

Dōjigiri (童子切, "Slayer of Shuten-dōji") is a celebrated tachi-style Japanese sword designated as a National Treasure of Japan. Renowned as one of the "Five Swords Under Heaven" (Tenka-Goken), it stands alongside Ōkanehira as what some call "the yokozuna of all Japanese swords" due to its unmatched craftsmanship and historical significance.

The blade is particularly valuable as one of the oldest surviving katana-type weapons, distinguished by its exceptional quality, artistic merit, remarkable preservation, and the legendary tale associated with it. Its ownership lineage traces through Japan's most influential military leaders—from the Ashikaga family to Oda Nobunaga, then to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Later, Shogun Hidetada bestowed it upon daimyo Matsudaira Tadanao of Echizen, after whose disgrace the sword passed to the Tsuyama branch of the Matsudaira family.
