Teumessian fox
📍 Teumessus, Greece
Legendary Creature
~1700 BC

The Teumessian fox was a legendary creature in Greek mythology - a gigantic fox that was destined to never be caught. The gods sent this supernatural beast to Thebes as divine punishment, where it preyed upon the city's children.
When Creon, the regent of Thebes, tasked Amphitryon with killing the uncatchable fox, he attempted to solve this impossible challenge by using Laelaps, a magical dog fated to catch anything it pursued. This created a paradox: an inescapable fox pursued by an infallible hunter. To resolve this logical impossibility, Zeus transformed both creatures into stone and placed them among the stars as the constellations Canis Major (Laelaps) and Canis Minor (the Teumessian fox).
