Perun

Perun is the supreme deity of the Slavic pantheon, the god of thunder, lightning, and war. He was the patron of the Prince and his warriors. The largest and most important sanctuary (kapyshche) to Perun was established in 980 CE by Prince Volodymyr on the Old Kyiv Hill. It featured a massive wooden idol with a silver head and golden mustache, serving as the primary religious center of Kievan Rus.

As the ruler of the heavens, Perun was believed to strike evil forces with his lightning and sacred axe. His cult was central to the state until 988 CE, when the sanctuary was destroyed following the adoption of Christianity. Despite the destruction of the Kyiv temple, Perun remains the most famous figure of ancient Slavic mythology, symbolizing strength and celestial power.
