Flying Head

The Flying Head, known also as the Big Head or the Great Head, is a ravenous, cannibalistic spirit from Iroquois and Wyandot mythology that is typically described as a massive human head with long dark hair, terrible eyes, and razor-sharp fangs. Often depicted as being larger than the tallest man with an impenetrable hide and wings like a bat or bird, this entity is said to have originated during a severe famine in the Adirondack Mountains when a group of young men murdered their elders and threw their decapitated heads into a lake. This act of violence birthed the monster, which subsequently drove the local tribes away from their ancestral hunting grounds near Lake Pleasant and the Hudson River for generations.

Despite its terrifying power and immunity to weapons, the Flying Head was ultimately defeated by a lone woman sitting by her fire: upon seeing her eat roasted acorns, the creature mistakenly believed she was consuming live coals and fled in absolute terror, never to bother the people again.
