Amazons

📍 Themiscyra, Turkey People ~1900 BC
Amazons

The Amazons were legendary female warriors in Greek mythology, appearing in ancient epics like the Iliad and the Labours of Heracles. These skilled fighters, known for their prowess in archery and horsemanship, maintained a matriarchal society where they raised only daughters and met with men solely for reproduction.

Led by their queen from the capital of Themiscyra in northern Anatolia, the Amazons conducted military campaigns across the ancient world and founded numerous cities including Ephesos, Smyrna, and Sinope. While ancient texts Legendary Placed their homeland at various locations from Asia Minor to Libya, archaeological discoveries of female warrior burial sites in the Eurasian Steppes suggest the Amazon myths may have been inspired by real women warriors among the Scythian, Sarmatian, and Hittite peoples.
