Abere

Abere is an evil figure in the folk beliefs and legends of Melanesia. She is described as a female cannibal who takes the form of a wild woman accompanied by young female attendants. Abere lures men into approaching her by appearing in the waters of a lake or swamp. Once they draw near, she commands rushes and reeds to grow thickly around her, concealing her presence. From this hidden place she ensnares unsuspecting men who come searching for her, ultimately killing and devouring them.
