Volkolak
Volkolak is the Slavic version of the werewolf, a creature bridging the gap between the human and animal worlds. Unlike Western monsters, the Vovkulak in Ukrainian legends was often a tragic figure-a person cursed by a sorcerer or a "wolfer" who transformed by somersaulting over a knife stuck in a stump. Around 900 CE, these beliefs were deeply rooted among forest tribes, where the wolf was seen as a sacred but dangerous brother to man.
The Slavic tradition is exceptionally rich in therianthropy. Beyond the wolf, myths describe shape-shifters turning into bears, lynxes, and even birds of prey. This variety reflects a "fluid" view of nature where the boundary between human and beast was easily crossed through rituals or ancient bloodlines. Whether seen as a cursed soul or a powerful warrior using a totem form for strength, the Vovkulak remains the ultimate symbol of the untamed, dual nature of the Slavic spirit.
