Rostam

📍 Sistan, Iran Legendary Figure ~400 AD
Rostam

Rostam (Persian: رستم) stands as one of the greatest heroes in Persian mythology. Immortalized in Ferdowsi's 10th-century masterpiece the Shahnameh (Epic of Kings), Rostam's tales draw from ancient Iranian folklore and history that predates Islamic influence in the region.

As the son of Zāl and Rudaba, Rostam served as the Marzban (military commander) of Sistan, a region spanning parts of modern-day Iran and Afghanistan. His legendary status rests on several famous episodes, including his dramatic conflict with fellow hero Esfandiyār, his journey to Mazandaran, and the epic Seven Labours.

In battle, Rostam cut an imposing figure atop his mighty stallion Rakhsh, clad in his distinctive armor known as Babr-e Bayan. Among the Iranian paladins, none could match his strength and valor. The stories surrounding him evoke the martial spirit of the Parthian Empire, reflecting deep cultural ties to that historical period.
