Psoglav

📍 Istria, Bosnia and Herzegovina — ~1100 AD
Psoglav

Psoglav (Serbian Cyrillic: Псоглав, literally "doghead") is a demonic creature from Balkan mythology, with beliefs about it recorded in regions of Bosnia and Montenegro. It is described as having the body of a human with horse-like legs, a dog’s head with iron teeth, and a single eye in the center of its forehead.

Psoglavs were said to dwell in caves or in dark lands rich in gemstones but devoid of sunlight. They practiced anthropophagy, consuming living humans or exhuming corpses from graves to feed upon them. In Croatian, the creature is called psoglavac, and in Slovene, it is psoglavec. Numerous legends about Psoglavs exist, particularly on the Istrian peninsula in Croatia.
