Mavka

Mavka is a distinct and haunting figure in Ukrainian mythology, often described as a beautiful young woman with long, flowing hair and green eyes. Originating around 900 CE, the myth of the Mavka is most prevalent in the Carpathian and Polissya regions. Unlike the common European woodsprites, Mavkas are believed to be the spirits of girls who died an unnatural or untimely death. They are most famous for having "no back," meaning if you look behind them, you can see their internal organs—a symbol of their hollow, soulless nature.

Mavkas inhabit deep forests and mountain slopes, where they plant flowers and dance in the moonlight. They are known for their enchanting beauty and melodious voices, which they use to lure young men into the woods. Once a victim is caught, the Mavka might dance them to exhaustion or tickle them to death. Despite their dangerous reputation, they are also seen as protectors of the forest’s secrets. The myth of the Mavka represents the tragic beauty of nature and the ancient belief that the spirits of the lost remain tethered to the wild landscapes of their homeland.
