Kikimora

Kikimora is a well-known female spirit in Slavic mythology, whose roots go back to at least 900 CE. She is usually depicted as a thin, small woman with messy hair, sometimes having bird-like features or a long nose. There are two types of Kikimora: the swamp spirit and the household spirit. The swamp Kikimora is often blamed for leading travelers into dangerous bogs by making sounds that mimic babies crying or people calling for help.

In the household, she is a secretive spirit who lives behind the stove or in the cellar. She is primarily associated with spinning, weaving, and needlework. While she can be helpful to hardworking families, she often plays tricks at night—tangling thread, breaking dishes, or making scratching noises to annoy those she dislikes. Kikimora represents the mysterious "shadow side" of domestic life and the unpredictable dangers of the marshlands, serving as a warning to keep both the home and the spirit in order.
