Deity
~712 AD

Izanagi (イザナギ/伊邪那岐/伊弉諾) or Izanaki (イザナキ), formally honored as Izanagi-no-Mikoto (伊邪那岐命/伊弉諾尊, meaning "He-who-invites" or the "Male-who-invites"), is the creator deity (kami) of both creation and life in Japanese mythology.
Izanagi and his sister-wife Izanami are the final pair in the seven generations of primordial deities that emerged after heaven and earth formed. Together, they created the Japanese archipelago and produced numerous deities, including the sun goddess Amaterasu, the moon deity Tsukuyomi, and the storm god Susanoo.
As the divine progenitor from whom the current Japanese imperial family claims descent, Izanagi represents the foundational figure in Japan's mythological lineage.
