Attis

📍 Pessinus, Turkey Deity ~1200 BC
Attis

Attis was a deity from Phrygian and Greek mythology who served as consort to the goddess Cybele. He was both a vegetation god and a figure of dramatic myth, with his story of self-castration, death, and resurrection symbolizing the annual cycle of crops that die in winter and return in spring. His priests, known as the Galli, were eunuchs who followed his example of self-mutilation. In Ovid's version of the myth, Attis's story concludes with his transformation into a pine tree.
