Aigamuxa

The aigamuxa are fascinating mythological creatures from Khoikhoi folklore. These unusual beings prey primarily on humans, whom they perceive as zebras, using their remarkably elongated teeth to consume their victims. According to legend, these creatures specifically target solitary travelers crossing the desert at night.

Perhaps the most distinctive feature of the aigamuxa is their unusual anatomy—they have eyes located on their feet. This peculiar characteristic creates a significant hunting disadvantage, as they cannot see their human prey while standing upright. To overcome this limitation, the aigamuxa must either balance on their hands or head, or lie flat in the sand to observe potential victims.

These intriguing tales were notably documented by Leonhard Schultze-Jena, who collected them directly from Khoikhoi storytellers for his scholarly work Aus Namaland und Kalahari.
