THE DUNGAVENHOOTER
The Dungavenhooter was once widespread from Maine to Michigan, though today it is reported only occasionally in the Upper Peninsula of the latter state.
A marsh-dwelling predator, it is considered highly dangerous to humans. Its body resembles that of an alligator, but with unusual features: it has no mouth, abnormally large nostrils, short legs, and a thick, powerful tail. Its only vocalization is a loud snort.
The Dungavenhooter is said to lie in wait behind marsh vegetation, often a whiffle bush, until an unsuspecting logger passes nearby. When within reach, it strikes with its formidable tail, rendering the victim senseless. Folklore claims that it then pounds the victim until he is reduced to a gaseous state, which the creature inhales eagerly through its wide nostrils. It is especially attracted to prey under the influence of alcohol, which it pursues with particular vigor.
