Sugaar
Sugaar is the male counterpart to the goddess Mari in Basque mythology, primarily personified as a dragon or serpent associated with thunder and storms. While fewer legends exist for him compared to his consort, his primary mythological role involves periodically joining her in the mountains to generate weather events. Beyond his elemental duties, Sugaar is central to the origin story of Jaun Zuria, the mythical first Lord of Biscay, whom he reportedly fathered after seducing a princess in the village of Mundaka.
Although many historians view this specific legend as a political fabrication intended to distinguish the Lordship of Biscay from Navarre, the historical voting privileges granted to Mundaka delegates in the regional parliament suggest the story held significant cultural and legal weight.
