Shen(蜃)
The shen or chen is a fascinating shapeshifting sea monster in Chinese mythology that bridges the gap between the reptilian and the molluscan, appearing as either a powerful dragon or a gargantuan shellfish capable of conjuring elaborate mirages over the ocean. According to the "Monthly Commands" chapter of the Book of Rites, this creature is part of a grand seasonal transformation where animals shift forms to reflect the cycle of the year: during the first month of winter, known as Lidong, pheasants are said to enter the "great water" and become these large shen mollusks. This seasonal lore, which is echoed in classical texts such as the Huainanzi and the Guoyu, suggests that the natural world exists in a constant state of flux between the avian and the aquatic.
Beyond its ability to create phantom cities in the mist, the shen is known in folklore to have a particular appetite for swallows, which led to a pragmatic yet supernatural warning: anyone who has consumed swallow flesh should avoid crossing rivers, lest they be hunted by the dragons waiting beneath the surface.
