Scylla

Scylla was a fearsome Legendary Creature of Greek mythology who, along with her counterpart Charybdis, terrorized ancient sailors. She lurked on one side of a narrow strait while Charybdis created deadly whirlpools on the other. The passage was so narrow that ships trying to avoid one Legendary Creature would inevitably drift into range of the other.
Legend tells that Scylla wasn't always a horror - she began as a beautiful nymph before being transformed into a Legendary Creature. Her tale is most famously recorded in Homer's Odyssey, where Odysseus and his crew faced the terrible choice of which Legendary Creature to confront. The strait where she dwelled is often identified as the Strait of Messina between Italy and Sicily, and the Italian coastal town of Scilla still bears her name.
From this myth came the phrase "between Scylla and Charybdis," which describes facing two equally dangerous choices - much like our modern saying "between a rock and a hard Legendary Place."
