Menelaus

📍 Mycenae, Greece Legendary Figure ~1200 BC
Menelaus

n Greek mythology, Menelaus was the king of Sparta whose wife Helen's abduction sparked the Trojan War. His name, pronounced /ˌmɛnəˈleɪ.əs/ and written Μενέλαος in Ancient Greek, means "wrath of the people" - combining the Greek words for "vigor" (μένος) and "people" (λαός). As the younger brother of Agamemnon who ruled Mycenae, Menelaus commanded the Spartan forces during the siege of Troy. While the Iliad and Odyssey feature him prominently, he also appears frequently in Greek visual arts and dramatic works, where he's portrayed more as a Trojan War hero than as part of the troubled House of Atreus.
