Lou Carcolh

📍 Hastingues, France — ~1300 AD
Lou Carcolh

Lou Carcolh, a formidable beast of French folklore, is described as a gargantuan, snail-like serpent possessing a massive shell and long, hairy tentacles that it uses to ensnare unsuspecting prey. Residing in a cavern hidden beneath the town of Hastingues in the Les Landes region of southwestern France, the creature is said to leave a trail of thick slime that often precedes its arrival, signaling danger to anyone in the vicinity. Its tentacles have an extraordinary reach, allowing it to snatch victims from afar and pull them into the depths of its lair without the beast ever needing to leave its subterranean home.

Interestingly, the name Carcolh has become a nickname for the town of Hastingues itself because of the settlement's location on a distinct, rounded hill, and local men traditionally used the legend as a playful warning to young women by cautioning that "the carcolh will catch you!"
