Bukavac

📍 Syrmia, Multiple — ~700 AD
Bukavac

The Bukavac (pronounced [bǔːkaʋat͡s] in Serbo-Croatian) is a demonic creature from Slavic mythology, particularly associated with the Syrmia region.

It is often described as a terrifying, six-legged beast with twisted horns and glowing blue eyes. Dwelling in lakes and still waters, the Bukavac is said to emerge only at night, announcing its presence with a deafening, eerie noise—reflected in its name, which comes from buka, meaning "noise" or "clamor."

According to legend, the creature would leap onto unsuspecting people or animals in the darkness and strangle them, vanishing just as suddenly as it appeared.
