Ashuaps

šŸ“ Ashuapmushuan River, Quebec, Canada — ~1950 AD
Ashuaps

Also known as the monster of Lac Saint-Jean in Canada, this is a water monster of the Loch Ness Monster type. The name Ashuaps is actually derived from Ashuapmouchouan, the name of the river where it was first seen. The monster was described as being about fifty to sixty feet long, able to lift itself about three feet out of the water, and either black or dark blue in color. It was first definitely recorded as being in the lake in 1950, then again in July 1977, when a party in a boat bound for L'Isle au Couleuvres, or Grass-Snake Island, saw a huge creature foaming and disturbing an otherwise calm lake surface. In 1978 the members of a terrified Native American family from the local Ouiatchouan Reservation were violently thrown from their canoe. On the same day Ashuaps had been seen by two other parties in the River Ashuapmouchouan, which joins the same lake. By 1980 several sightings had been recorded, and the news media as well as researchers were interested in the legends that had long been known in the Montagnais Native American community.
