Areion

📍 Tilphossium, Greece — ~1300 BC
Areion

In the pantheon of Greek mythological beasts, Arion (or Areion) stands out as a creature of exceptional lineage and ability. A divinely bred horse characterized by a striking black mane and fabulous speed, Arion is best remembered for his pivotal role in the survival of the Argive royal line.

His origins are steeped in divine conflict. While minor accounts attribute his birth to Gaia or the wind god Zephyrus, the most enduring tradition identifies his parents as Poseidon and Demeter. The myth recounts that Demeter, fleeing Poseidon’s advances, transformed into a mare and hid among the herds of King Oncius in Arcadia. Poseidon, seeing through the ruse, transformed into a stallion and mated with her, resulting in the birth of the immortal horse.

Arion’s service to Greek heroes was distinguished by martial success. He was first mastered by Heracles, who rode him during the expedition to Elis and in combat against Cycnus, the son of Ares. Eventually, Heracles gifted the stallion to Adrastus, the King of Argos. This transfer proved fateful during the disastrous campaign of the Seven Against Thebes. Although Arion demonstrated his physical prowess by winning the inaugural Nemean Games en route to the war, his greatest feat was defensive. As the Argive forces were decimated, Arion spirited Adrastus away from the battlefield. Thanks to the horse's supernatural speed, the King became the expedition’s sole survivor.
