Anyame

📍 Kumasi, Ghana Deity ~1000 AD
Anyame

Onyame, also known as Nyankopɔn (Onyankopong) or Odomankoma, is the supreme god of Ghana's Akan people, commonly referred to as Anyame. The name translates to "The one who knows and sees everything" in the Akan language, representing an omniscient and omnipotent sky deity.

The name Odomankoma, meaning "Creator," derives from "Dom" (universe/state) and "Anko-ma" (who alone gives), literally translating to "The only one who gives the universe." Some scholars suggest Odomankoma is an abbreviation of O-doma-ara-nko-ma, where "Doma" means abundance, "nko" means only/alone, and "ma" means full of—collectively signifying "The one who is uninterruptedly, infinitely, and exclusively full of the manifold."

Odomankoma is sometimes called Odomankoma wuo ("The Creator's death"), referencing how Odomankoma created Death (Owuo) but was later killed by it. Other epithets include "Oboade" (Creator), "Oboo nkwa" (Creator of life), and "Oboo-wuo" (Creator of death).

Additional titles include "Borebore" (Architect) and "Ananse Kokuroko" (The great designer/spider), highlighting Odomankoma's connection to divine wisdom and possibly to Ananse, who might be Odomankoma's son in Akan mythology. The deity is also called "Amaomee" (The giver of plenty), reinforcing his role as creator in Akom religion.
