Ala

📍 Umuahia, Nigeria Deity ~6000 BC
Ala

Ala is the goddess of the Ibo people, an ethnic group from eastern Nigeria. The daughter of the powerful god Chuku, she is revered as the mother goddess of the earth, ruler of the underworld, guardian of the harvest, and goddess of fertility for both humans and animals.

In Ibo tradition, Ala is believed to be the force that nurtures a child’s growth within the mother's womb. She watches over the child as they grow into adulthood. When a person dies, Ala receives them into her womb, known as the "pocket of Ala." As a lawgiver, Ala teaches people how to live virtuous lives, with her laws emphasizing values such as honesty.
