Aiatar

📍 Lapland , Finland — ~1300 BC
Aiatar

Aiatar, also known as Ajatar or Ajattara depending on the region, is a semisupernatural entity from Finnish folklore referred to as the "Devil of the Woods." This malevolent female spirit takes the form of a serpent or dragon and dwells in forests and isolated tundra landscapes. According to legend, Aiatar nurses snakes, and any person who crosses paths with these serpents or glimpses them in the woodland risks falling gravely ill. Similar beings appear in southern Estonian folklore under the names Ai, Aijo, or Aijatar.
