Ahura Mazda, meaning "wise lord," was the chief god in ancient Persian mythology. With the rise of Zoroastrianism in Persia around 600 B.C., Ahura Mazda became its supreme deity. The Persians believed him to be the creator of the earth, the heavens, and humanity, as well as the source of all goodness and happiness. In later Zoroastrian traditions, he was referred to as Ohrmazd.
