Abgal
📍 Lower Mesopotamia, Iraq
Legendary Creature
~3000 BC
Abgal refers to a group of water beings in the mythology of the ancient Sumerians of Lower Mesopotamia. These seven spirits, also known as Apkallu, are sometimes compared to mermen, portrayed as part human and part fish. The Abgal served as protective guardians of the world and were said to originate from the primeval waters of Apsu, dwelling in the retinue of Enki, the god of wisdom. Their role was that of instructors to humanity, teaching the sciences and arts. By day they guided and imparted knowledge, and by night they returned to the depths of the waters.
